The road to 2014 Nike Cross Nationals at Glendoveer in Portland, Oregon

If running is one of our more pure pursuits, then cross country racing lays all that bare. Mud and hills, faith and failure, guts and grit: all this was on display at the 2014 Nike Cross National Championships at Glendoveer in Portland, Oregon as the top 200 girls and boys—teams and individuals—faced off in fierce competition—not only against each other, but against the elements and most importantly: themselves.

“Cross country is a battle against the elements: hills, mud, wind. For a lot of these high school kids, this is the biggest race of their lives—everybody’s coming in with different tools, different strengths and being able to evaluate what works for you instead of others dictating your race…those are usually the people who do the best. That’s why I love cross country: it’s about grit, staying in tune mentally and conquering the elements. It’s about who’s the best runner. That’s it.”

—Simon Bairu, 2x NCAA Cross Country champion, Canadian 10,000m record holder, co-creator of the new Nike Cross National Championship course at Glendoveer in Portland, Oregon

Hills, mud, snow, ice, mud, hills. Close to 20,000 New York State high school runners compete in cross country every fall. Add to that competitive teams and standout individuals from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine and you begin to understand the depth that feeds the fervor for the sport in the region as it builds towards the Nike Cross National Championships in Portland, Oregon.

Did we mention the hills? And the mud?
